What Abington is built out of

Abington grew outward from its rail stop and the Route 18 and 123 corridors, and the age of a house here tells you most of what you need to know about its wiring. The older center is wood-frame homes and capes from roughly 1900 to 1940. Push out from there and you are into postwar ranches from the fifties and sixties, then subdivisions from the eighties onward.

The pre-war stock near the center is where we spend most of our time. That is where 60-amp fuse services are still in place, and where knob-and-tube turns up once you get a light into the attic — cloth-insulated conductors on porcelain knobs, spliced in open air, with no ground anywhere in the circuit.

Common in Abington

  • 60-amp fuse panels in pre-war homes
  • Knob-and-tube in attics and exterior walls
  • Two-prong outlets with no equipment ground
  • Overloaded kitchen circuits added decades later
  • Service upgrades requested by a home insurer

Abington specifics

A 1920s service and a modern load

An EV charger is the clearest example of the problem. A Level 2 charger wants a dedicated 240V circuit pulling 40 or 48 amps continuously. On a 60-amp service that was sized for lighting, a range and not much else, there is simply no room for it — and no honest installer can make room without upgrading the service.

So the first thing we do on an older Abington house is a load calculation, not a quote for the charger. It tells you whether you are buying a charger install or a service upgrade with a charger on the end of it. Either way you get the number before we start, and we pull the permit and meet the inspector ourselves.
